Kevin Sheedy, the brains behind the AFL’s Anzac and Dreamtime Rounds is at it again. His new project is a ‘Country Match at the MCG’.
This will be a match to celebrate the contribution Regional Australia provides the Country, the AFL and the Community.
When you look at the fantastic AFL players to have come out of Country Australia it’s not hard to see this match evolving into an annual round.
Sheedy is no stranger to Country WA and hosted the Landmark 40 Year Partnership with Country Dinner in April 2014. Country WA has also provided a bit of a talent breading ground for the master coach with names like Baker, Duckworth, Symons, Kickett, Ryder and more coming out of the state.
Sheedy was recently in Perth and has travelled extensively throughout the Country in recent years "If we do this right, this match could become as big as ANZAC or Indigiouness Rounds, I think if the country communities get behind it, it will paint a pretty strong picture of what they represent and show how much they contribute to this country. I'd like to help country people present that to the AFL and to the community at large."
WACFL General Manager Joe Georgiades spoke of the weekend "I think this is a great initiative to help promote the plight of country football. For those that can remenber the first Anzac Match between Collingwood and Essendon there was about 20,000 fans that couldn't get into the 'G'. I'm sure there are a lot of country people who would love to say they were at the first ever country match, met Kevin Sheedy, watched a heap of footy and made a few new friends along the way. The itinerary for the weekend countinues to grow and it'll be a great trip for those who love their football and hopefully the trip is something we can grow each year."
Country Football's long term partner - Landmark has also got behind the weekend and for clients and those interested in drone technology, they will be conducting a half day tour and professional development opportunity.
WACFL, Travel & Sports and Landmark are giving country football followers the opportunity to experience this action packed footy weekend in Melbourne filled with football, farming and fellowship and the chance to rub shoulders with Sheedy and other Country Greats.
