What is the project about?
This project is about the health and wellbeing of young Western Australians who play AFL. Youth mental health is a big deal. More young people than ever are struggling with anxiety, depression, and stress. Unfortunately, many young people don’t know how to look after their mental health, or don’t have the support they need to learn how to. When we don’t know how to look after our mental health, we might do things that help us to feel better right now but aren’t good for us in the long-term. For example, drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana, vaping, or eating junk food. But we might also do things that help us feel better right now that are good for us in the long-term. For example, spending time with friends and family, moving your body, being outside, or doing a fun hobby. Young people who play AFL are already doing something that is good for them right now and in the long-term. But playing sport can also be stressful. We want to learn about the health and wellbeing of young people who play AFL. We are asking you to tell us more about your health and risk behaviours that you may be taking. This information will help us design information and intervention materials that will be used as part of a new program to better support the mental health and wellbeing of young AFL players.
