For this week’s edition of throwback Thursday we take a look at the 2005 season. The Landmark Country Championships saw 26 sides converge on Perth across the six grades (3 x Seniors and 3 x Colts).

The Championships were in the midst of an Upper Great Southern Football League dominance. During a span of 12 years Uppers’ would claim eight A section titles with their 2005 victory over the South West by 33 pts the second title of a ‘four peat’. The Jock Coleman Medal went to Kukerin/Dumbleyung’s Ricky Mott who had just returned to his home club having spent time at both Sydney and Carlton.

Eastern Districts proved too strong in the B section decider, defeating Great Southern by 13 points. The title would be Eastern Districts last for a 13 year span, finally broken with their C Section success in 2018.

The elusive Jonno Woods from the Great Southern won the Bud Byfield Medal as the B section Fairest and Best. The win gave Woods the A & B Section quinella after he claimed the Championship honour in 2003.

C Section honours went to Esperance District by three straight kicks over Central Wheatbelt. Despite going down in the final the Central Wheatbelt boys still had something to celebrate with Keith Hathaway making it back to back Jock Beattie Medals as C Section Fairest and Best.

The Colts Division welcomed Pilbara and Murchison teams into the fold for 2005 but the A section result would prove to be a familiar tale with the South West flexing their muscles in the final to run out 46 pt winners over the Kimberley Spirit.

The Kimberley’s Liam Bedford claimed the Ken Baxter Medal as the Division’s best player. Bedford would take his career to greater heights over the next few years spending a couple of years on Geelong’s list, followed by a stint at West Coast.

Regional Districts thumped Avon in the B Colts final. Katanning Wanderers Matt Levitzke leading the way for the Regional Districts side, named the Clem Bray Medallist. In the C Section final a combined Central Midlands Coastal/Central Wheatbelt side proved too strong for Eastern Districts with Chevy Hughes from Eastern Districts claiming the WACFL Medal as the Fairest and Best.
