The Mortlock Football League are the Division 2 Landmark Country Championship winners following their hard-fought 14-point win over Eastern Districts in Sunday’s final.
After narrowly defeating Central Midlands Coastal in their Regional round clash in Wongan hills, Mortlock began their push for a finals berth with a thumping 55-point win over North Midlands on Saturday before a narrow seven-point win over Central Wheatbelt in the trying conditions at East Fremantle secured a spot in the decider.
Despite being down to only 22 fit players Mortlock jumped out of the blocks with a seven goal to four first term. Key forward Arron Russell was on fire, kicking three first term goals, continuing the form that saw him named alongside Central Midland Coastal’s Lewis Harvey as the Division 2 Best and Fairest.
The second term was a tight affair with neither side able to develop any real momentum. A goal to Mortlock’s Gavin Carter and a fourth to Russell threatened to blow the game open before a steadier by former West Perth and Swan Districts midfielder Alex James saw Eastern Districts enter the main break trailing by 16 points.
The margin as reduce to ten points within the first minute of the third term thanks to a Lachlan Mouritz major. It’s as close as Eastern Districts would get though with both sides trading goals in the lead up to the final change.
Facing a 13-point deficit heading into the final term the game looked set for a tight finish, especially when that margin was reduced to only seven points at the 3-minute mark thanks to Josh Della Bosca.
The comeback wasn’t to be however for Eastern Districts as two goals in quick succession to Michael Burgess put an end to the contest.
Mortlock’s Corey Higgins received the Landmark Medal as best afield whilst Arron Russell (pictured) joined him in the best, finishing with five goals.
Mouritz was amongst Eastern Districts best, along with former West Perth duo Marc Crisp and Simon Duckworth.
