The New Holland State Country Squad continued its preparations for South Australia with a solid win over the WAAFL Under 23’s at East Fremantle Oval on Friday night.
An experienced WACFL jumped out of the box early with ten scoring shots to one in the first term, although they failed to make the most of their opportunities kicking a wayward 2.8 for the term. Boulder Tigers Scott Worthington (pictured) was the difference up forward kicking both of the WACFL’s goals.
The second term belonged to the WACFL side as they kicked five goals to one to take a 38-point lead into the main break. Worthington was unstoppable adding another three goals for the term whilst Paul Mugambwa and Brad Holmes both also hit the scoreboard.
The WACFL extended their lead in the third term with goals to Leigh Kohlmann and James Grabski taking the margin out to 51 points at the final change.
In even final quarter both sides kicked three goals with WACFL eventually running out 12.11-83 to 5.6-36 winners.
In a best on ground performance Worthington finished with six majors and he was joined in the best by Peel's Eddie Dann and Brendon Jones. Dann was impressive all night across half back with his speed, reading of the play and precision kicking. Ongerup’s Jayden Brooks was a solid contributor in the ruck and Eastern Districts Simon Duckworth provided some quality forward entries across half forward.
The New Holland State squad now looks ahead to this Friday when a predominantly Under 24’s side will tackle the State 18’s at Fremantle Oval.
