What makes umpiring worth it

Umpiring is one of the few roles in footy that pays from day one. Whether you’re looking for a side hustle or something more serious, it’s a great way to earn on the weekends while being part of the action.

In a recent report, AFL field umpires were recorded to cover up to 14km a game, while boundary umpires were 16km a game! Umpiring is a sure way to keep your steps up.

Whether its honing your game knowledge and rule expertise, sharpening your decision making skills, strong communication or leadership qualities; umpiring is a great field of work to develop personally and professionally in a range of skill sets.

Umpire development is strongly supported by Country Football WA, WA Football and the AFL – from community football through to elite football levels, there is an umpiring opportunity for everyone – and if taking umpiring to the next level is for you, development pathways are available too.”

Nope. You’ll learn everything you need to know through training and support. No one expects you to be perfect on day one.
Not at all. Umpiring is a great way to build fitness, but you don’t need to be an athlete to get started.
You don’t need playing experience. Some of the best umpires come from other sports or backgrounds. If you’ve got a good attitude and want to get involved, you’ll be welcomed!
All you need to get started is a good attitude and a willingness to learn. Once you register, you’ll be signed up through Officials HQ. A valid Working With Children Check is also required for all umpires.
Pay depends on the game, but rates usually start at $45 for junior community games and go up to $200 for senior games. Not bad for a weekend gig you’ll actually enjoy!
